Use plan mode before multi-file changes in Claude Code

Press Shift+Tab to enter plan mode: Claude reads and proposes a plan without editing files. Refine the plan, then let it execute.

Letting an agent jump straight into editing can produce code that solves the wrong problem. Plan mode separates exploring from executing.

The flow

  1. Press Shift+Tab to cycle into plan mode (the status bar shows plan mode is on).
  2. Describe the change. Claude reads files and writes a plan but makes no edits until you approve.
  3. Push back on the plan: missing edge cases, wrong files, simpler approach.
  4. Switch to auto-accept edits and let it execute.

The team’s advice: pour your effort into the plan so the implementation can be one-shot.

When to skip it: for obvious one-line fixes, plan mode is just overhead.
